Medusa Tattoo – the Scaring Gorgon
Medusa tattoo is not necessarily a tattoo of a harmless jellyfish. The frightening tattoo of Gorgon’s head also belongs to this category. Such medusa tattoo depicts the most famous of three gorgon sisters called Stheno, Euryale and Medusa.
Medusa tattoo looks really terrifying as gorgon’s body is covered with glittering scales and her hair is comprised of moving snakes. The creature also has copper arms and hands while there’re sharp steel claws on her fingers. The description is provided by an ancient Greek poet Hesiod in his poem of Teogonia (The Origin of Gods).
Medusa is the only of the three sister who is mortal. Yet it is not so easy to kill her as her look carries death to everyone who would meet it. Medusa can turn into stone with a look of her eyes. That’s why Perseus managed to cut off her head only using his shield as a mirror to avoid looking at her. Further on, the legend tells that a magic horse Pegasus was born from a headless body of Gorgon Medusa.
Some myths tell us that later on Medusa’s head was depicted on Athena’s shield to symbolize caution and intimidation. Other myths, however, state that Medusa was an attractive girl with gorgeous hair by origin, but when she dared to compare her beauty with that of gods she was punished. Her hair turned into snakes and her look got an ability to turn people into stone.
Medusa tattoo inspired by Greek mythology is breathtaking to look at. It evokes rather mixed feelings. On the one hand it is more than eye-catching and signifies a bright personality of its wearer while on the other hand Medusa’s terrifying appearance is likely to make the public disapprove of such tattoos.
