In China the word ‘deer’ is pronounced the same way with the word ‘abundance’.

Most typical features of a deer are swiftness, grace and beauty. That’s why it is sometimes associated with music and poetry. When people have learned about the deer habits, it has got another association – solitude. Ancient Celts believed that deer are the main cattle of Gods (probably, this can be an explanation for eight deer of Santa Claus). In ancient mythologies deer are messengers and guides that show heroes the way to their goals. Deer are believed to have the ability to find medical herbs. A tattoo design of a wounded deer with some herbs in his mouth is a symbol of love languor. Deer also symbolize carefulness and a quick ear.

Deer is related to Christianity also. A deer trampling down a snake means destruction of the evil. Psalm 42:1 reads: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.” And Psalm 18:33: “He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights.” It’s a symbol of piety and devotion, and is often depicted drinking from a stream near the cross. Of course, for many people deer have their own meaning and associations. In any case – a deer tattoo is one of the most beautiful you can get.
